Eileen began her acting career in 1970s by appearing on local television shows and commercials. In 1978 she made her feature film debut with the role of Peggy on the short-lived series “The Tomorrow People.” After that, she was able to reprise support roles in three more films, before landing the main part of Sue Snively in”Happy Days,” an ABC comedy “Happy Days” (1981-1983).After performing the role of Sue during three consecutive seasons, Eileen was forced to leave “HappyDays” to focus on her own profession as an actress. The actress continued appearing on TV until 1989 when she stopped acting. Eileen won many awards during her acting career, including two Emmy Awards as well as two Golden Globe Awards.

After a while, she took a break from acting to have her children and husband John Mahoney raise them. Eileen Ryan then returned to acting in A Beautiful Mind (2001). Following this success Eileen Ryan was cast as a co-star with Russell Crowe opposite Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Mind (2001). The film was awarded numerous prizes including Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards.
